St John Passion - March 23rd with the mixed choirs of Norwich Cathedral

Although we have performed St. John Passion before, this was the first time we have done so on period instruments and it was a delight to be welcome our woodwind colleagues to perform with us. There was sadly no press review but we did ask the youngsters of the choir what they thought of performing such an amazing work:

ST.JOHN PASSION –
Through the eyes of the choristers…

The boys of the choir particularly were very young, a couple of them only 8, and it occurred to me that it would be very interesting to find out what they thought of being part of St John Passion, when most 8-year olds are far removed from this sort of experience. So any who wanted to were asked to fill in a short questionnaire. The responses are excellent. Enjoy:

NB. I HOPE YOU HAVE ENJOYED BEING PART OF ST. JOHN PASSION...WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BEST BITS?
“singing in front of all those people and seeing the smiles on their faces at the end”
“I enjoyed the crucifying of Jesus and there were many chorals that I found nice”
“When we sang about Barabas”
“the fast choruses”

NB. WAS IT HARD TO LEARN ALL THAT MUSIC AND HAVE YOU DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE?
"It was hard. I haven’t done anything this amazing before"
"The speed of the music was hard in places but we worked it out eventually"
"It was hard at times but we had a few months to learn it. I think I did well in learning the music"

NB. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU SING ST JOHN PASSION?
“it sounded very professional and exciting”
“I think about Jesus and how he died for our sins”
“pancakes”
“I thought it was amazing because it is not often we sing with professional choirs and orchestra”
“Look up and sing like there is no tomorrow”
”I think it was a great experience and when I am older I will be able to say I sang the St John Passion”
“It is very long and fun”

NB. HAS IT CHANGED YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT SINGING OR BACH IN ANY WAY?
“Bach is a good composer but it would be nicer if it wasn’t so long”
“loud isn’t always best”
“it was really fun”
“I used to think German was a bit brutal for singing; I think otherwise now. Bach did a great job composing his passion”
“Bach is a great writer and he has inspired me on the fun of singing in a great choir!”
