29-03-2014 - St Matthew Passion

Norwich Baroque combined with the massed choirs of Norwich Cathedral: the boys choir, girls choir, the lay clerks and the Consort for a performance of JS Bach's epic work that he referred to as "The Great Passion". It was a privilege to perform such amazing music.

EDP Review

A large audience was enthusiastic in its appreciation of this whole hearted performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion that was powerful and dramatic, sung with conviction and vividly coloured with period instruments.

Ashley Grote conducted the forces that had been assembled. There was vigour in the turbulent crowd scenes that contrasted with poised elegance in the solo meditations. Though mostly hearty, the chorales did reflect spiritual values and the final chorus came as a crowning triumph.
