In 1705, a 20-year-old J.S. Bach set out on foot for an astonishing 250-mile journey to Lübeck to hear the great composer and organist, Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707). What he found there must have been well worth the trip, as he extended his stay from the original plan of 4 weeks to a quarter of a year! Buxtehude’s 7-part oratorio, Membra Jesu Nostri, centres around a mediaeval meditation on the body of Jesus. This style of worship is a world away from the fiery drama of the St John Passion, but like Bach’s music, it offers deep solace for even the most troubled times.
