2011 - financial gambles and great opportunities
Finance is always a painful subject for any arts or music organsiation, but due to careful control and planning we have always managed to stay afloat. However, 2011 saw us take several gambles, the biggest being an incredible concert in Norwich Cathedral with Soprano Elizabeth Watts and Countertenor Michael Chance to a massive 450 people, astounding! Liz Watts is really the local girl who has already made it to the top and is still rising...a name to follow. The combination of Liz and Michael worked beatifully and many thanks to Michael for the idea!
It was a treat to welcome back Jayne May-Sysum in January, and then to perform two of Baroque's master-works, J.S Bach's "Magnificat" and Handel's "Dixit Dominus" with the Cathedral Consort.
April gave us another chance to welcome Michael for countertenor gems , and our first romp through Biber's amazing "Battalia a 10" ... crazy music!
"Buried Treasure" was our cue to delve into the treasure troves of lesser known Baroque composers with recorder and bassoon soloists, Kati Boosey and Frances Eustace.
A lucky break saw John Foster, director of Australian Baroque Brass, holidaying in Norwich with our own trumpet friend, John Coulton, so a concert was quickly arranged and the two Aussie brass chums shone.
Our first mini-tour took in Diss and the gorgeous Binham Priory. Binham was idyllic... perfect weather, a happy band after 3 days together, and everything just as we had hoped it might be. It was also the perfect opportunity for some great new publicity shots... suprisingly quick and easy to stage as the whole band just naturally grouped themselves in the most artistic way! ... yet another brilliant year with such a great bunch of people.
